Welcome to

mount bures

A faithful Christian presence

at the heart of our beautiful village

Welcome to the Church of St. John the Baptist, Mount Bures - a friendly and welcoming community of people meeting in our beautiful Grade 1-listed Church building, which has been serving Mount Bures since the 12th Century.

Whether you're visiting us to find out about service times, Weddings, Christenings, what we believe or how to visit us in person, we hope you discover all you need.

We look forward to meeting you, and may the Lord bless you as you search.

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have decided that all Church of England services and events are suspended until further notice, but that weddings and funerals can still go ahead. The Church will continue to be open during the day for private prayer and visits, and Clergy will continue to be available. In case of need please contact the Churchwardens.

Here at St. John's, we recognise that these are uncertain and challenging times for everyone. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We pray for those sick with the virus; for the doctors, nurses, health workers and other care givers, and all who support them in their work; and for those who are seeking ways to combat the spread of the virus. We pray too for those impacted in other ways: bereaved; worried about loved ones; frightened and alone at home; or anxious about their jobs and businesses; and for the most vulnerable in our communities and those who care for them.

Advice is changing rapidly and we are doing our utmost to keep pace with it, following guidance given to churches by the Church of England and by the UK Government.  For more information, please visit the following websites:

Whilst we are unable to gather for worship, we can continue our daily routine of prayer - and the Church of England has published a short service and special prayers here.

St. John's is part of the Benefice of Wormingford, Mount Bures and Little Horkesley, three villages at the very northern edge of the county of Essex bordering the River Stour.

Much of the Benefice is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and in a Conservation Area.

We are part of the Church of England Diocese of Chelmsford, in the Deanery of Colchester and are within a grouping called the North Colchester Family of Churches.
